There are plenty of haunted attractions to visit throughout the month of October—from houses to corn mazes and hayrides galore—but visiting an actual haunted house with a story behind it can elevate your spooky experience to a whole other level.

Peel Mansion – Bentonville, AR
Built in 1875 by Samuel Peel, this haunted house in Bentonville is known as one of the spookiest places in Arkansas. Peel was once a US Congressman with this mansion being his former home. He and his daughter, Minnie Belle, are known to haunt the property. Do a ghost walk of this house, where you may even here the piano playing softly by Minnie herself…

The Molly Brown House – Denver, CO
If the name rings a bell, it’s because this was the former residence of “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, who famously survived the Titanic. The home is now a museum, where visitors come from far and wide. Some claim they’ve spotted ghosts of Molly and her husband J.J., and have experienced cold spots throughout the house.

New London Ledge Lighthouse – Groton, CT
This house has been featured on ghost-hunting shows and is a popular among those searching for a good scare. They say it’s haunted by a former lighthouse keeper, and the ominous setting in the Thames River makes this one eerie place to not skip out on.

McPike Mansion – Alton, IL
A historic residence through and through, the McPike Mansion in Alton, Illinois is a haunted house that’s sure to make your October that much spookier. It was a boarding house in the 1940s, and has since turned into a place frequented by ghosts (or so some people claim.)

Franklin Castle – Cleveland, OH
A 30-room home is sure to be the talk of some paranormal activity. There’s a curse surrounding the home’s first owner, Hannes Tiedemann, gargoyles on the property, and strange organ music playing at random times. Don’t get lost when visiting this Cleveland home.
