Moving can be expensive. Whether you are moving to the other side of town or the other side of the country, you’ll want to budget for expenses, such as hiring movers, renting a truck, and paying for gas so costs don’t break the bank.
However, even if you have budgeted for your move, there can be costs that pop up that you were not expecting. Make sure you consider the following expenses when planning your move.
Packing supplies
You may have budgeted an amount for packing supplies already, but it can be a good idea to have some extra money for more bubble wrap, boxes, and tape. These items get used up quickly, especially if you underestimate the number of belongings you have.
Boarding pets
As stressful as a move can be on you, it can be even more so for your four-legged friends. Our pets are beloved members of our families, but they can be a nuisance while moving or can easily run out an open door unnoticed. That makes boarding your pet a good idea on moving day. The kennel will also require up-to-date vaccinations.
Lost security deposit
If you’re currently renting an apartment or house, you likely put a security deposit down when you first moved in. However, it isn’t always guaranteed that you’ll get this money back. You should do everything in your power to not violate the terms of the lease in hopes that you don’t lose this deposit. Make sure to notify the landlord in advance that you’re moving, and give the property a thorough cleaning before you leave.
Large item fees
Most of the items in your home will be covered by the cost a moving company quotes you, but some bulky items, such as pianos and pool tables, may cost you an extra fee. If you have any large items like this, make sure the moving company is aware before the move so you can avoid day-of charges.
Storage space
There’s a chance you may need somewhere to store your belongings, whether it’s because the closing date got pushed back and you can’t move in on time or you have too many belongings for your new space. Either way, you may need to rent a storage unit for a time until everything gets figured out.
Parking tickets
Depending on where you’re moving, parking may be limited. Your movers may need to park illegally or in a spot for too long to be able to easily bring your items in or out. Any tickets the movers get will be your responsibility. To avoid this, you should figure out parking before your moving day, as you may be able to get permits if needed.
Hotel stay and food
You never know what might happen during a move. Even if all your belongings are unloaded and stored in your new home, you may not have time to set up beds or cook a meal for your family. Instead of camping out on the floor, it can be much more comfortable to stay in a hotel for a night. Make sure you budget some money for meals until you’re all set up in your house.
Replacing items
It is wasteful to throw out some items that are still in perfectly good condition. However, you probably don’t want to bring along a toilet brush or plunger you’ve had for the last few years. If you’re throwing out items like this, make sure you have room in your budget to replace them.
Tip for your movers
Moving is hard work. If you hired a moving company, make sure you budget out some money to tip the workers.
Preparation is key during a move. By going in ready, you won’t be surprised by any of these hidden costs on moving day.
